Tourism Malaysia celebrates the launch of a new direct flight route by Myanmar Airways International (MAI), connecting Yangon (RGN) and Penang (PEN). This strategic development is expected to strengthen tourism, trade, and cultural exchange ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
The new twice-weekly service, operating every Monday and Thursday, will use an Embraer 190 (E190) aircraft with a 96-passenger capacity, ensuring smooth and convenient connectivity between Myanmar and Penang.
The inaugural flight touched down today at Penang International Airport, welcomed by an official ceremony attended by H.E. U Aung Soe Win, Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia; YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy; and YBhg. Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.
This new route enhances MAI’s Malaysian network, complementing its existing Yangon-Kuala Lumpur service, which began in April 2022 and currently operates 14 weekly flights.
Datuk Manoharan Periasamy noted that the Yangon-Penang flight would serve as a catalyst for increased tourist arrivals and economic collaboration between the two nations. “This initiative opens up exciting opportunities for both leisure and business travellers, while also strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties,” he said.
Mr. Tanes Kumar, CEO of MAI, echoed the sentiment, stating: “Penang’s rich culture and tourism appeal make it an ideal addition to our growing network. We are confident this route will contribute to regional economic growth while delivering our renowned hospitality.”
YB Wong Hon Wai added, “We welcome this direct connection as a boost to Penang’s global accessibility. It supports our medical tourism sector and showcases the diverse attractions our state has to offer.”
Tourist arrivals from Myanmar to Malaysia have shown significant growth in recent years. In 2024, Malaysia recorded 147,133 visitors from Myanmar—up from 102,587 in 2023 and 57,232 in 2019—highlighting a 43.4% increase from 2023 and a 157.1% increase from 2019.
Flights depart Yangon at 2:45 PM and arrive in Penang at 6:15 PM local time. Tickets are now available through the MAI website (www.maiair.com), authorised travel agents, and online booking platforms.
