KUALA TERENGGANU:

Malaysia is ramping up its commitment to marine conservation with the launch of an innovative Turtle Discovery Experience, a programme that fuses adventure tourism with impactful conservation work to help protect sea turtles.

This new initiative provides tourists with a rare opportunity to engage with one of Malaysia’s most cherished marine species—the endangered sea turtle—while contributing to vital conservation efforts. Visitors will not only embark on an immersive wildlife adventure but also gain a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving marine biodiversity for future generations.

Central to this initiative is Redang Island, renowned for its turquoise waters, untouched beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and rich marine life. It serves as the backdrop for this experience, offering travellers an ideal environment for both discovery and ecological impact.

The heart of the experience lies at the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, located on a secluded 350-metre crescent-shaped beach along the South China Sea. This site is one of Malaysia’s most crucial nesting grounds for the endangered green sea turtle.

Here, participants can witness and take part in the magical moment of releasing baby green turtles into their natural habitat. The hands-on programme also includes educational sessions on turtle biology, marine ecosystems, and the ongoing conservation strategies led by experts.

The sanctuary is managed by the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU), part of the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) under Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Designated as a fully protected zone by the Terengganu state government since 2005, Chagar Hutang sees up to 1,700 turtle nests each year, particularly during the peak nesting months of May to July.

Efforts focus on both green and hawksbill turtle species, with SEATRU conducting detailed monitoring, nest protection, and research to boost survival rates.

By offering this immersive Turtle Discovery Experience, Malaysia is positioning itself as a leader in eco-tourism, proving that tourism and conservation can go hand-in-hand. This initiative supports local communities while promoting environmental stewardship in one of Southeast Asia’s most ecologically significant marine environments.
