Bangkok:

In a significant step towards strengthening regional connectivity and economic integration, Thailand and Malaysia have signed an agreement to construct a parallel bridge over the Golok River, linking Su-ngai Kolok in Narathiwat, Thailand, with Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, Malaysia.

The agreement, witnessed by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the latter’s official visit to Thailand, marks a new chapter in bilateral infrastructure development aimed at boosting cross-border transportation, logistics, and tourism.

Formally signed by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, and Malaysia’s Minister of Works, Alexander Nanta Linggi, the agreement outlines a framework for project implementation and management. The bridge project will be managed by Thailand’s Department of Highways and financed through annual budget allocations.

Construction is slated to begin between September and October 2025 and is expected to be completed within 36 months. The new reinforced concrete bridge will span 116 meters in length and 14 meters in width, featuring two lanes dedicated to inbound traffic into Thailand. The existing bridge will then serve outbound traffic to Malaysia.

This infrastructure upgrade is set to ease congestion, improve the flow of vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians, and significantly enhance cross-border logistics. Importantly, it is also expected to stimulate economic activity and tourism in the southern provinces of Thailand and the northern region of Malaysia.

The project forms part of ongoing efforts to promote deeper collaboration between the two ASEAN neighbours and underscores their shared commitment to developing a seamless, modern transportation corridor for mutual economic growth and regional integration.
