Penang:

The 10th International Conference & Induction Ceremony, jointly organised by the International College of Dentists Section XV (ICDXV) and the World Stomatology Institute (WSI), officially opened today in Penang, gathering distinguished dental professionals, researchers, and educators from across the globe.

Themed “New Era of Digital AI Technology in Medicine and Dentistry,” the conference shines a spotlight on how artificial intelligence is revolutionising healthcare, particularly in the field of oral health. In his officiating speech, a state representative congratulated the organisers for assembling such a prestigious gathering and reaffirmed Penang’s commitment to healthcare innovation and international collaboration.

“AI has the potential to completely transform how we practice dentistry in Malaysia—from real-time diagnostics to expanding access through teledentistry in underserved regions. This is not science fiction anymore; it’s already here,” he shared, addressing the audience.

However, he also acknowledged current challenges in the Malaysian dental landscape, including uneven workforce distribution, limited placements for young graduates, and brain drain. “This is not just a workforce issue—it’s a structural one,” he said, calling for a rebalancing of national focus towards healthcare sciences under the broader STEM agenda.

In line with Penang2030’s goal of improving quality of life through better healthcare and lifelong learning, the state government expressed its dedication to addressing these concerns. “We are listening,” he assured, noting that active engagement with public and private dental communities will inform future strategies.

The event serves not just as a ceremonial milestone but as a platform for problem-solving and innovation in the industry. Delegates are expected to engage in meaningful discussions, form lasting partnerships, and exchange ideas that will shape the future of dentistry both locally and globally.

The opening ceremony concluded with a heartfelt appreciation to all delegates for choosing Penang as their host and for their unwavering commitment to advancing oral healthcare worldwide.
