Travellers from Malaysia and Cambodia can now enjoy hassle-free payments across borders using just a QR scan, thanks to the latest phase of collaboration between the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
Following the successful pilot launched six months ago, Phase Two of the cross-border QR payment initiative has officially gone live. This upgrade enables users of Cambodia’s Bakong app and Malaysia’s DuitNow to make instant transactions by simply scanning QR codes during their travels.
The launch ceremony, held in Kuala Lumpur, was officiated by NBC Governor Chea Serey and BNM Governor Dato’ Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour.
Ghaffour noted that this development represents a major step forward in ASEAN’s journey toward financial integration. “This cross-border payment link brings real-time convenience to travellers, businesses, and communities across the region,” he said.
The move is expected to significantly benefit small businesses and travellers alike. With instant and secure payment capability, Malaysian tourists in Cambodia—and vice versa—can now enjoy a more seamless spending experience.
Governor Serey emphasized that the QR linkage not only supports tourism but also helps connect small enterprises and individuals to broader economic opportunities, promoting financial inclusion and regional digital connectivity in line with ASEAN’s vision.
This initiative marks a key milestone in advancing digital payment systems and fostering deeper economic ties between the two nations.
