The Penang State Government has warmly welcomed the Uzbekistan Tourism Board in a special presentation today, marking the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at fostering greater cultural exchange and boosting tourism between Penang and Uzbekistan. This collaboration highlights both regions' rich cultural heritage and mutual aspirations to increase visitor exchanges and economic growth.
Uzbekistan, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Silk Road,” is renowned for its historical significance, stunning architecture, and vibrant cultural landscape. Penang, on the other hand, is celebrated for its multicultural heritage, thriving tourism industry, and strategic position as a global business and cultural hub. The strong historical and diplomatic ties between Penang and Uzbekistan were evident throughout the event, setting the stage for a deeper collaboration in tourism, trade, and investment.
In his welcoming address, the Chief Minister of Penang emphasized the importance of this new partnership. “As we strengthen our tourism ties, it is my hope that this collaboration will not only increase visitor exchanges between Uzbekistan and Penang but also enhance mutual understanding and foster economic growth,” he said.
Penang’s growing prominence as a key tourism and business hub was underscored by the recent achievements of Penang International Airport (PIA), which has become Malaysia’s second busiest airport, recording 7.47 million passengers in 2024—a 7.07% increase from the previous year. The airport’s expansion has been accompanied by the introduction of 12 new international routes, including direct flights to major cities like Dubai, Shanghai, and Xiamen. This growing connectivity is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Penang’s ties with Uzbekistan, opening the door for more Uzbek travelers to experience the island’s diverse attractions.
Among the key destinations highlighted during the presentation were Penang’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed George Town, famous for its colonial architecture and thriving street art scene, and the Penang Hill Funicular Railway, recently named one of the world’s top 10 most beautiful funicular railways by Travel + Leisure magazine. The island’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve further highlights its natural beauty and commitment to sustainable tourism.
Penang is also rapidly earning a reputation as a global culinary destination, with 69 establishments featured in Malaysia’s Michelin Guide 2025. This recognition includes two Michelin-starred restaurants and a variety of Michelin Selected and Bib Gourmand eateries, reinforcing Penang’s position as a food capital. The island’s halal-certified restaurants make it an appealing destination for Muslim travelers, including those from Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan, with its awe-inspiring Silk Road cities and architectural wonders, offers a wealth of cultural experiences for visitors. With direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent already operating four times a week via Uzbekistan Airways and Batik Air, the link between Penang and Uzbekistan is poised to strengthen even further. Penang’s abundant halal dining options, alongside its rich Islamic heritage, make it an attractive destination for Uzbek tourists seeking a welcoming and culturally resonant environment.
The Chief Minister also emphasized the long-standing diplomatic relations between Penang and other nations, highlighting the presence of 23 Honorary Consulates in Penang, which reflects the state’s openness to global partnerships. This network, ranging from Australia to Kazakhstan, further enhances Penang’s position as a diplomatic and economic hub in the region.
As the presentation concluded, the Chief Minister expressed his hope for a fruitful collaboration, noting that both Penang and Uzbekistan share a deep respect for cultural heritage and tourism. “Penang is not just an ideal place for tourists, it is also a dynamic hub for business, culture, and innovation,” he said.
With both regions committed to enhancing their tourism offerings and broadening their economic ties, this partnership holds great potential for future growth. The Penang State Government looks forward to the continued development of this relationship, which promises to yield mutual benefits for both Penang and Uzbekistan.
As the tourism industry rebounds in the post-pandemic era, this partnership stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural exchange and the shared vision of prosperity between Penang and Uzbekistan.
