SABAH:

Sandakan holds immense opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism through the strengths of its local communities, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said.

The Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister highlighted Pulau Tanjung Aru as having the potential for community-based tourism.

"The island, with its pristine beaches and accessibility to historical sites can be developed as a pilot project in the district," he said in a briefing by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong and Sandakan Tourism Association President Teo Chee Kim held at the Sabah Tourism Board here.

The briefing, also attended by Sabah Tourism Board deputy chief executive officer Julinus Jimit, focused on the significance of empowering local villagers and expanding tourism beyond nature and wildlife.

This initiative would provide visitors with a wider range of experiences and diversify the region's tourism offerings.

Joniston emphasised the Sabah Tourism Board's role in connecting successful community-based tourism operators with the local community in Sandakan.

"Community-based tourism has been successful in Sabah and around the world, as it promotes rural areas, empowers local communities, preserves cultural heritage, and offers unique experiences for tourists.

"The Sabah Tourism Board plays a crucial role in facilitating partnerships and knowledge-sharing, creating an environment that supports the development of community-based tourism ventures in Sandakan," he stated.
